The Hedgerow Handbook – Recipes, Remedies and Rituals by Adele Nozedar

I have recently acquired a delightful book written by Adele Nozedar and gloriously illustrated by Lizzie Harper called “The Hedgerow Handbook – Recipes, Remedies and Rituals”. This book is a splendid read for those of us with a love of botany and “The Great British Hedgerow” but I think this will appeal also to any with a love of books as a whole.

I have taken great delight within the pages of this book over recent weeks reading both the well researched content and revelling in the beautiful illustrations which have managed to transport me back to my childhood in a host of ways. Some of the very first books I had regarding nature were presented in a very similar style; it was therefore easy to slip into the contents in many ways and relive the wonder of discovering the natural world with somewhat older eyes.

I have always enjoyed books that have been well illustrated over books with photographers for my personal reading pleasure. It always intrigues how an artist can see so much detail and capture it, a skill I have always lacked, and Lizzie Harper the illustrator has surpassed herself with her works n this book.

If you see a copy of this book whilst in a book store do set aside a few moments to loose yourself in its pages. “The Hedgerow Handbook – Recipes, Remedies and Rituals” not only makes a nice addition to any naturalists or bushcrafters bookshelf but would also make a splendid gift to those not so accustomed to the botany in our hedges.

The ISBN for this publication is 9780224086714 and is priced at UK £12.99 CAN $32.95

I hope you enjoy discovering this book as much as I did!

Please note, when identifying all plants for food “If in doubt leave it out” – never take chances with wild foods!

"Year 5 took part in a ‘Badger Bush Craft’ workshop. This was a whole day of practical activities led by Phil Brown, a specialist in outdoor learning. Following this a number of children together with their families were invited to take part in a Saturday workshop to learn survival skills, building shelters, lighting fires etc. This was part of an extended services project."
