Badger Bushcraft and Milstead and Frinsted CoE Primary School Outdoor Learning Day
Written by Phil Brown, Badger Bushcraft News Wednesday, 20 June 2012 10:31
We were recently delighted to have been invited to design a programme of activities and outdoor workshops Milstead and Frinsted CoE Primary which were to be delivered with kind permission of a local landowner in a glorious area of coppiced chestnut and surrounding established woodland.
It is always a pleasure to visit a new school to deliver bushcraft and nature based learning activities and finding the beautiful and exceptionally rurally located Milstead and Frinsted CoE Primary was no exception. Despite being only some 12 miles from our base here in Mid-Kent it took well over half an hour to drive to the school through some spectacular countryside that also had some fantastically narrow lanes!
The school was sited in the most glorious and enviably rural position backing onto fields and a rather lovely series of cants of chestnut coppice that were being well worked and cared for by the landowner. Badger Bushcraft had been given permission to set up an expedition style camp in the woods and deliver a series of sessions that included:-
- Fire Law, Safety and Basic First Aid
- Fire Craft and Fire Lighting
- Backwoods Cooking
- Shelter Building
- Nature Walk
- Plant and Tree Identification
- Small Mammal Feeding Sign
- Survival and Survival Kit
A series of photographs of the days events are shown below.

The day was a great success and the children, teachers and staff were a joy to work with. They fully embraced all the activities with gusto and a sense of fun which included Phil making some “bushcraft hats” from the leaf of the abundant burdock (Arctium lappa).

We look forward to further supporting Milstead and Frinsted CoE Primary School with the potential development of an outdoor teaching area that would be truly amazing and unique!
We would like to extend our thanks to the Headteacher, Katherine Baker, the staff and all the children for making our day at work so much fun and such a memorable event!
